Next Government Bailout: NBC
So let me get this straight: Jay Leno left the venerable Tonight Show to work on new projects.
The first New Project was essentially a carbon copy of his version of the Tonight Show, in a 10 p.m. time slot.
Conan O’Brien was promoted to the Tonight Show, where he’s apparently been working like a Trojan to fill some very big shoes.
Neither of them are doing very well.
So NBC, realizing that they’ve made a horrendous mistake with these two, decides to bring Leno back into his old job, and tries to move O’Brien to make way for the proverbial Prodigal Son.
Conan says “no”.
NBC pulls out its chequebook, offers Conan an ENORMOUS sum of money to leave, and Conan says “see ya”.
With bitterness being felt all around, Jay Leno comes back to the Tonight Show in March.
Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon must be spinning in their graves.
