Because I Can’t Resist A Good Train Wreck
My beloved has sworn off all things political for the duration of both the US Presidential and Canadian Parliamentary election campaigns. For some strange reason, he feels better for it.
Me? I’ve kind of been sitting on the fence, going between disgust and disdain for what is an entirely unnecessary election on this side of the border, and an overwhelming feeling of obligation that I should know exactly what’s going on. South of the 49th parallel, I’m just amazed and amused by the contrasts: A young upstart vs an old fossil, accompanied by an old fossil vs a young…oh words do fail me.
I admit it: I’m dying to see if Stephane Dion’s English flames out in the English-language debate between the Canadian party leaders (he aced the French debate last night, according to all the polls): I want to see if Elizabeth May has a good head on her shoulders, or if she’s just another shrieky woman who wants to stick it to Stephen Harper, and I want to see if Stephen Harper can be any more arrogant. On the American side, I want to see if Joe Biden knows his presidents, and if Sarah Palin can squeak any more loudly about her knowledge of foreign policy, bestowed on her by the simple fact that she lives next door to Canada.
I’ve poured the wine. I might even make popcorn.
