Random Encounters

A police officer came into the store a while back. He was in civilian clothes, but I recognized him as the media contact for one of the regional police forces. He was in front of the television cameras every second night, so his presence was sort of hard to avoid. I said hello.

(With a slightly quizzical look on my face) “Are you (name omitted)?”

He: “Yeah. How do you know me? Did I arrest you?”

Ugh. Typical cop. Contrast that with a recent encounter with a local television reporter. (For someone who watches little television, I remember far too many faces.) I was driving out of Tim Horton’s on my way to work, when I noticed him sitting next to me at the light. I e-mailed him to confirm that was who I saw.

“Yup. It was probably me. I didn’t cut you off, did I?”

Reporter out-charms police officer every time.
